Our Story
Growing up as an adoptee between two cultures, our founder often felt different — not necessarily excluded, but rarely fully reflected in what she saw around her. Whether it was the lack of representation of people of colour, or noticing how her body didn’t resemble those of her Danish friends, it created a quiet sense of feeling both unrecognisable and out of place. Over time, she came to understand that the feeling of being “too much” or “not enough” is something many people carry silently.
SHADES was created to change that narrative.
Because there is nothing wrong with you. You fit in. You are not out of place. You are already enough.”
Giving Back & Creating Opportunity
Our commitment to supporting girls and women is rooted in our founder’s story. Her biological mother grew up in unstable circumstances, carrying responsibilities far beyond her years — yet made courageous choices to give her daughter a safer, more stable life. Through years of resilience and persistence, she rebuilt her life and eventually became a lawyer. Her story is a testament to strength and determination — but also a reminder that not everyone can carry that weight alone. For our founder, it inspires both deep gratitude and a responsibility to give back.
How We Give Back
Giving back is part of our foundation. We donate 1% of all sales to Pigefonden, supporting girls and young women with access to education, protection, and the tools to build independent futures. From helping young mothers stay in school to raising awareness of rights and preventing violence, their work creates real impact where it’s needed most. We believe not everyone starts from the same place — which is why we support initiatives that drive lasting change. When girls are empowered, the ripple effect goes far beyond the individual. At the same time, SHADES exists to build a community where fewer people feel alone, unseen, or “wrong.”. “Because empowerment starts within you.” — Mia Alexandra Vega Præsius
